Since 2010, Miami's most earnest inventors have taken to Bayfront Park in wild attempts at winning Red Bull's annual Flugtag challenge. From half-naked dudes in chicken feathers to Iron Man's Miami incarnation, every creation imaginable has sailed through the sky -- most concluding with giant belly-flops in the water below.

Registration is now open for Flugtag 2013. And this year, the stakes are even higher, because the competition is going nationwide. This go-around is the first time five events will be held simultaneously. The Flugtag will kick off in Miami, Chicago, Washington DC, Dallas, and Long Beach, all on September 21.

Fearless fliers will launch their ridiculous contraptions off 28-foot-high ramps. Some will soar (briefly). Some will crash and splash. But all will entertain.

According to the folks at Red Bull, Miami was chosen for its crazy factor. Plus, people apparently love flocking (pun intended) to the 305 to show off their flying skills.

As far as tips for entrants, the Red Bull peeps say nothing is too out there. Past creative geniuses have used their favorite foods, pop culture icons, technology, and mythology to craft their creations. Some have even attempted to drum up hometown support through college, sports, and local pride.

The American distance record, by the way, is a whopping 207 feet. So you better have some seriously awesome aerodynamics skills to beat those numbers.

The Flugtag (which means "flying day" in German) has happened internationally for 12 years. And, it's not just about length. Teams are also judged on creativity and showmanship. So buff dudes in neon paint = extra points.

If you wanna take home top honors, make like a bird ... and act like an ass. Red Bull (and the rest of Miami) wants it that way.

Applying for the Flugtag is free, but pilots must be age 18 or older. For more info and to enter, check out the Flugtag website. There are first, second and third place prizes involved, but really, aren't bragging rights more than enough?
