Hit me!
The new James Brown biopic Get On Up is gettin' on up them screens today, and any soul-addict should hit the theaters, at least sneak in, to see Chadwick Boseman sweat his ass off while doing right by the Hardest Working Man in Show Business.
All the great music and personal intrigue aside, there's even more reason why we as Miamians should support the film. Back in the day, James Brown had mad love for our city, and we have a special, if not somewhat embarrassing, connection with the multi-talented soul man.
Did you know James Brown once made an appearance as a character on the hit '80s TV show Miami Vice? In the fourth season episode "Missing Hours," he's plays a slightly insane, well-coifed R&B singer and UFO cult leader (not so different from his everyday life, right?).
His character's name is Lou DeLong, and the episode starts with some bizarre freak outs at the Grove Harbor Cinema. A man's body goes missing from the morgue, and his wife claims he was abducted by aliens. She can't remember 12 hours of horror, which she claims was the time of her abduction. The insanity is traced back to Lou DeLong who runs some weird abduction-survivor cult called Astrolife. People can't stop singing "I Feel Good" whenever things are going awry. Insanity and really bad but super trippy special effect ensue. Chris Rock is also a major player.
You can watch the entire episode via Hulu. It's pretty insane.
