How do you know you’re a legend? When your own event is old enough to drink.
Yes, Miami’s queen queer is back with the 21st-annual Shelley Novak Awards, taking over Score (1437 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) for a night of wigs, wit, lip-syncing, glitter, and, yes, gold-painted Barbie dolls.
Novak couldn’t be more pleased. She beat cancer last year, and she’s got to prove to you suckers she’s still alive. Joining her as cohosts are the ever-lively, never-too-classy Juleisy y Karla, AKA Hialeah’s Finest.
The program, brought to you with support from the Pennyback Boyz, is packed to the brim with showiness and sass. There’s nothing like an awards show to bring out the diva in a drag queen, and with nominations in Best MC, Best Diva, Best Dance Choreography, and many other categories, egos will be riding pretty high.
At least 25 artists are scheduled to perform, but who knows what will happen when the spotlight hits? It might just become a knockdown, drag-out affair. We sure hope so. The ceremony begins Monday with a special red-carpet entrance at 9 p.m. There’s no cover, but Shelley says you should “buy some drinks, you cheap homosexuals.” Call 305-535-1111 or visit scorebar.net.
