If the commercial success of Think Like a Man is any indication, America is ready to line up for more actors of color at the box office. And that’s a great thing, especially for Miami moviegoers this week. The American Black Film Festival, a beacon for African-American and urban movie buffs, will celebrate its sweet 16 this summer in Miami Beach. A leading film festival in the world for diversity, ABFF has put 700 films on the big screen and entertains more than 5,000 attendees each year. Thursday, HBO’s 15th annual short film competition will happen at the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach), giving five filmmakers the chance to win a $20,000 prize. The festival continues through Sunday with red-carpet events, screenings, seminars, and special panels on topics in black film, from women in the industry to analyzing box office and online data. There will even be a celebration of the success of Think Like a Man at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach (1 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach), complete with the filmmakers and cast members. New to the program this year is a mobile entertainment showcase, giving merit to the art of easily shared short-form content on cell phones and the Internet.
