Night Moves

For a regular Miami nightcrawler, some things are no big deal. A beautiful woman struggling out of a body stocking, a bedazzled performance artist writhing atop a bar, or a living marionette wobbling across a platform? Sure, that’s just Saturday night circa 3 a.m. An experiment to bridge the seated-tickets set and club-hopper crowd is the extravagant, one-night-only production that is Mimzy’s Playhouse. Creators Milena Hale and Rod Pratt bill it as a show that “artistically fuses nightlife and theater.” In other words, it takes the energy of late-night weirdness and translates it for the stage. The one-act show loosely follows Mimzy, a traditionally trained dancer who likes to boogie on the disco round. This opens the plot to many kinds of multigenre possibilities, and the vignettes presented along Mimzy’s travels include singing, live music, comic sketches, and of course heaps and heaps of dancing. The entire cast is made up of Miami natives, and local culture vultures will recognize many of the names as the area’s top talents — besides Hale and fellow creators, they include Martika Guerrero, Danielle Freyre, Rudi Goblen, Maria Zouroudis, Randy Singer, and Joshua Stedman. All deserve credit for working on such an ambitious undertaking by and for locals, outside of the usual Basel scramble. See Mimzy’s Playhouse Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at the Colony Theatre.
