Allow us to introduce you to a little-known film genre called sharksploitation. One example is the 1976 drive-in classic Mako: The Jaws of Death, in which a weird, nature-loving guy in South Florida discovers he has a psychic link with sharks. He becomes very protective of his finned friends and ultimately uses the animals to exact revenge on exploitative humans. This pulp, made-in-Miami flick is just one of the selections in Return of Super Eight Movie Night the Sequel, an evening of trippy film at the Bas Fisher invitational. Curated by artists Barron Sherer and Kevin Arrow, the semiregular series is a love letter to 8- and 16mm film formats, in which flicker and graininess are as hypnotic as the rare footage projected. This Thursday’s installment will also include Star Wars, which will screen in a diptych, one in English and one Spanish. There will be vintage movie trailers of cult classics such as Straight Jacket, The Atomic Monster, and Children of the Damned. An ’80s home movie by two stoned frat boys features parkour years before the Beastie Boys made it mainstream with their “Sabotage” video. Rounding out the celebration of all things analog, DJs WaterBed Kev and Ciro Splicer will provide the night’s soundtrack with retro 45s.
