Fernando Perdomo is a musician's musician — every gigging player in town seems to know him, and he seems to have worked with at least half of those folks. A virtuoso whiz kid on the guitar, Perdomo has largely earned his ducats as a session player, producer, and engineer, boasting some serious credits by his early 20s. For years, he toured with Latin pop stars Christian Castro and Soraya, and has recorded for everyone from Starbucks chanteuse Hilary McRae to reggaetonero Tego Calderón. That's not to mention the TV performances with Juanes, Paulina Rubio, and Jeremias — or that bass-playing gig with none other than Beny Moré.
But that's Perdomo the hired gun. Perdomo the bandleader is now all about his pet project, Dreaming in Stereo. And while the wunderkind is dexterous in any number of global musical styles, his new group's take on classic prog rock is closest to his heart. Don't worry, it's not a bunch of weird, epic keyboard noodling. Perdomo has dubbed his band's style "prog pop," which usually works out to sunny, melodic rock with a sort of Left Banke-style, orchestral baroque texture. And though a gig at a busy mall Apple Store sounds sort of un-rock 'n' roll, watch closely — those crisp, natural keyboard sounds in many of Perdomo's songs are played on his iPhone.
