Miami City Ballet’s Program III will deliver tragedy, comedy, and romance — in pointe shoes, dress shoes, high heels, and even bare feet. This installment of the company’s 25th anniversary season features MCB’s premiere of Promethean Fire, considered to be choreographer Paul Taylor’s response to the events on September 11, 2001. And the ballet company will look to its heritage with George Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony, which is inspired by the sylphs and pastoral landscapes characteristic of ballet’s Romantic era. It’s a fitting choice considering MCB artistic director Edward Villella achieved stardom as a dancer in Balanchine’s New York City Ballet. The program will also include “Nine Sinatra Songs,” in which Twyla Tharp’s brand of contemporary moves meets athletic exhibition and ballroom dance. For “Scotch,” dancers will pirouette to live accompaniment from Opus One Orchestra.
