Are you a liar? Do you have dark thoughts or fantasies? Do you have a guilty conscience? Do you want to confess? Try writing some fiction. There’s no better escape for your inner psycho than composing a narrative. However, telling a story is not as easy as, well, telling a story. You need some training, grasshopper. Take a class, learn narrative techniques, and surround yourself with other neurotic introverts. Luckily for you, Florida Center for the Literary Arts is hosting its annual summer fiction workshop, An Introduction to Fiction: Writing From Experience. This time around, the symphony will be conducted by Chenjerai Hove (pronounced chen-jeh-rye). Hove is a poet, author, essayist, and human rights activist from Zimbabwe with more than 40 years of professional writing experience. Ten years ago, he fled his country in exile after countless death threats for his provocative work. For the past decade, he has led a migrant’s life, lecturing in universities while sharing the themes of his fiction. He is currently the writer-in-residence for Miami: City of Refuge, a Knight Foundation project. This one-of-a-kind workshop will last six weeks.
