Miami might be the land of the beautiful, but lets face facts: One in five Floridians is obese. Despite the myriad of reasons to exercise (plentiful sunshine, 24-hour gyms, and yoga/pilates/pole-dancing classes), many of us never get off the couch. Well, heres a good excuse to do just that: The City of Coral Gables is opening its roads to cyclists of all levels today from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Local police will escort riders, so you wont need to dodge traffic or worry about becoming a Department of Transportation statistic. This first-ever Cycling Celebration is organized by the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. The length will depend on who shows up, but a ten-mile course has already been planned. And if a bunch of Lance Armstrong wannabes arrive in tight yellow spandex shirts, the ride might go on for seventeen miles. Admission is free. Bring your own bike and helmet. The ride begins at 10:30 a.m. at Ponce de Leon Middle School, 5801 Augusto St., Coral Gables.
