“It’s been said she knocks ’em dead/When she lands in town..../All those gifts those courters give/To sweet Georgia Brown” -- just a sample of the little known lyrics to Louis Armstrong’s “Sweet Georgia Brown.” Most folks don’t know Satchmo wrote the tune or even that it has lyrics. But they know what to expect when they hear the instrumental version: the Harlem Globetrotters, for eight decades elevating basketball to its highest entertainment potential. The ambassadors of goodwill, masters of hoops humor, and extremely skilled athletes have always lived up to their name, playing in 117 -- more than half -- of the world’s nations. Besides the antics, tricks, and displays of skill, they also spend a half-hour meeting and greeting fans after each game and engage in numerous charitable ventures. Mascot Globie is the latest addition to the fun. The Trotters play the New York Nationals today at 4:00 p.m. at the American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Tickets start at $19. Call 305-358-5885, or visit the box office for tickets. Check out www.harlemglobetrotters.com to purchase merchandise. Sweet.
