The Miami Beach Cinematheque plans to send Art Miami off with a sensory jarring splash tonight when it presents "Waves," a site specific projection installation by multimedia minx Rosalind Schneider.

The artist is transforming the cinematheque into a "temporal awareness environment," projecting Atlantic Ocean inspired imagery onto a huge sphere dominating the space. Schneider will also exhibit large format digital prints on canvas culled from video footage she shot over a two month span on South Beach. The New Yorker made a detailed observation of the beach, sky, and movement of ocean waves in an exploration of earth and water that has been an ongoing theme of her work. "The Atlantic becomes a metaphor for creation or evolution and the regeneration of planet Earth," Schneider muses.

She conjures a sense that one is viewing a miniature planet hovering within arm's reach in the darkened space, where one sees waves caroming across the sphere's surface and the tides endlessly licking away a slit of shore. "Whether interpreted as related to the world's evolution, or perhaps intelligent design, or maybe connected to neither, Schneider's work is different things to different people, and that is part of its value," says Cinematheque director Dana Keith.
