Just as electronic music flows through Miami’s veins, jazz is the lifeblood of New Orleans. Katrina may have battered the bayou beyond recognition, but as long as there’s a three-piece combo left between the Mississippi River and Rampart Street, the city’s soul will remain intact. One of the true deacons of Nawlins jazz is clarinetist Dr. Michael White, who will headline Jazz at MoCA this Friday at the Museum for Contemporary Art.

For the past 25 years, Dr. White has performed with both the Young Tuxedo Brass Band and the Original Liberty Jazz Band. He’s also held the Keller Endowed Chair in the Humanities of New Orleans Music and Culture at Xavier University. And he’s a frequent guest director at the Lincoln Center jazz concerts in New York City. So yeah, he knows a little something about how to get you off your feet.

As usual, the free concert is outdoors, and the museum will be open to visitors between 7 and 10 in case you haven’t gotten a peek at the ongoing “Convention” exhibit.
