Hip-hop and rock 'n' roll might not have existed without jazz. Without Coltrane, could there have been A Tribe Called Quest? Could there have been beat-boxing without scat and the incomparable jazz vocalist Al Jarreau? Probably not. But we admit that when Jarreau is beat-boxing and playing the maracas, he looks like he's having an epileptic attack while trying to burp a baby, but we can overlook that because his voice is one of music's rare treasures.
See Al Jarreau and Ramsey Lewis at the Arsht Center's Knight Concert Hall. Jarreau and designated NEA jazz master Lewis are both multiple Grammy winners, and Lewis's new album, Songs From the Heart, displays a musician and composer at the height of his career. Support the roots of modern music and sustain America's pulse.
