With the exception of The Jetsons, the future pretty much always gets a bum rap. Sci-fi books and films usually prophesy our doom in a dystopian wasteland ravaged by foreign invaders, plagues, and zombies. Or, even better, zombie plagues. Meanwhile, the past, even in its more traumatic moments (Inglourious Basterds, anyone?), becomes vintage and chic.
Lets hope thats all coming to an end with the group art show Screw Nostalgia I Want the Future at Pink Ghost, starring works inspired by robots, space, and aliens. The show will feature the futuristic interpretations of local artists such as graphic designer Jose Lopez of Freedom Art, who was responsible for the popular For Arts Sake series of shows around Fort Lauderdale. Lopezs whimsical illustrations tend to be nostalgic with their vintage aesthetic, so itll be interesting to see if his vision for the future still carries that theme despite the shows title to the contrary. Also showing will be artists David DaCosta, Bukubuku, Matthew Groves, Project Detonate, Ashley Fedo, Ryan Klaverweide, Lynette May, Andrew Bargeron, Comagirl, Valentina Crespo (Kawaii Universe), and Camilo Bejarano.
Mondays-Saturdays, 12-7 p.m. Starts: Aug. 2. Continues through Aug. 31, 2010
