Nothing quite girds you for an aural assault like the intense underground imagery of a handmade rock poster announcing that your favorite wailers are in town. By the time the house lights go down and the band strikes up a chord at the honky-tonk, your scalp is itching with anticipation and your eyes aching on the verge of a meltdown.

Post No Bills: A Rock Poster Show,” opening tonight at 7:00 at ArtCenter/South Florida (800 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach), features more than 100 works by eighteen artists from the United States and Canada who have contributed to the art form. “In the last twenty years, there has been an explosion of activity in the rock poster genre,” curator and poster artist Kristen Thiele explains. “The formally outmoded, traditional forms of printing -- especially silkscreen and letterpress -- have been revitalized,” she says. “These are not just posters; they are limited-edition, handmade pieces of art.”

Jesse Jackson, who has been turning this town on its ear, will be belting out folk tunes tonight to ramp up the artsy roadhouse vibe. The exhibit runs through November 19. Call 305-674-8278, or visit www.artcentersf.org.
