"So castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually." Maybe so, Jimi Hendrix, but that's no reason not to have another sandcastle-building contest. As part of the nearly month-long American Institute of Architects' Miami Architecture Week, local firms will compete for best design during Sandblast 2003, now in its sixth year. Of course, when we say "local" and we say Miami and the subject is architecture, sometimes we might as well say "national" or even "global." Bear in mind that last year's sandcastle champion was our very own internationally renowned architectural outfit Arquitectonica. So what does making a sandcastle have to do with architecture? "Creative ingenuity," says AIA Miami president-elect Lourdes Solera, who will be officially installed (right on the beach?) as part of the week's festivities. Construction commences at noon behind the Roney Palace, 2399 Collins Ave., Miami Beach. Admission is free. Call 305-448-7488. -- By Victor Cruz

Sports Fans Get Respect

Break out the face paint, fish fans. Pull on the rainbow-colored wig and the big foam finger, and dust off that 8-foot stuffed marlin. While everyone thinks you're insane, they won't be laughing after Sports Illustrated hands you a $500 check and splashes your photo on its Website for being judged Florida's "Craziest Sports Fan." In celebration of the magazine's 50th anniversary, SI is touring the country looking for the nuttiest of the sports nutty in a traveling exhibition of everything sports related. The tour features the latest in sports-watching technology, sports challenges, and a film of the greatest moments in sports over the past half-century. Be sure to dress to impress. The exhibit runs from Saturday, November 8, to Sunday, November 16, at Homestead Sports Complex, 1601 SE 28th Ave. Admission is free. Call 305-224-4570. -- By John Anderson

Cold Cows

Think hockey, and a fast-moving predator like a panther or cheetah seems appropriate as a team moniker. Now think fat, lethargic sea cow, and hockey doesn't immediately spring to mind. But the 6-team World Hockey Association 2 thinks so. Its new minor-league franchise, the Miami Manatees, will open its 21-week season against the Macon Trax at 7:05 p.m. at the Miami Arena (721 NW 1st Ave.), erstwhile home to the Florida Panthers. Could be worse: We could be named the Seals as in Orlando Seals, former stomping ground of Manatees coach Zac Boyer. Tickets range from $10 to $50. Call 305-536-7825. -- By Nina Korman
