December is around the corner and toy-buying season is kicking into high gear. This year, instead of soldiering through the madding crowd in search of Optimus Prime, why not cut out the middleman? Hasbro Toys invites you to ransack its warehouse. Fill your cart with specially discounted G.I. Joes, Tonka trucks, Transformers, My Little Ponies, and Parker Brothers games, and you'll do more than make your little ones smile this holiday season. Chair-ity Case
Wolfsonian takes a seat
SAT 11/20
Whether sitting at the dinner table, toiling away at a desk, or just curling up like a cat in a favorite La-Z-Boy, we spend a large chunk of our lives planted in chairs. Indeed, Archie Bunker's iconic armchair became so ingrained in American pop culture it is now enshrined at the Smithsonian. From the princely throne to the tipsy barstool, the butt-coddling marvel in all its remarkable manifestations remains one of creation's most practical comforts. "Evolution/Revolution: A Century of Modern Seating," opens today and offers a scintillating posterior showcase of the best seats turned out between 1849 and 1946. Get cushy with some of history's stellar squats beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Wolfsonian-Florida International University, 1001 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Call 305-535-2622. -- Carlos Suarez de Jesus
Lest We Forget
THU 11/18
Humanitarian Elie Wiesel observed, "Although not all victims of the Holocaust were Jewish, all Jews were its victims." A somber reminder of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust stands amid the impatient traffic near the Miami Beach Convention Center, on the corner of Meridian Avenue and Dade Boulevard. The "Sculpture of Love and Anguish," a patina bronze arm with an Auschwitz tattoo reaching to the sky, is the centerpiece of the Holocaust Memorial, balanced by the reflective life of the lily pond beside it. A black granite wall, etched with the names of victims and photographs and text of the horrors of concentration camps, runs beneath an arbor of white bougainvillea. Tonight at 6:00, the Holocaust Memorial 15th Anniversary Benefit Dinner at the Fontainebleau Hilton Hotel, 4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, will raise funds to provide support to Holocaust survivors in the community and benefit educational outreach activities. Call 305-274-4772 for reservations and price information. -- Lyssa Oberkreser
