Work It

Superdesigner Karl Lagerfeld swears by Coke Zero and is rarely seen in anything that’s not white-and-black. Traver Rains and Richie Rich -- the guys behind avant-garde fashion line Heatherette -- rock more makeup than you probably have in your entire eye-lined life. Now if you think you’re ready for a similar life of fashion and eccentricity, you’d better be at the Fashion Designers Expo of South Florida.

Founded by the inventive minds behind Kimaje Kreations, the expo is for aspiring fashion and accessories designers as well as models. “It’s creating a Fashion Week feel but for aspiring designers,” says the event’s director, Clinton K. Powell. “Anybody who’s in their room sewing or at home trying to put something together, or walking in front of the mirror saying that they can be a model -- this is going to get them that exposure.” This three-day event at the Hyatt Regency Hotel & Miami Convention Center will feature workshops, runway shows, musical performances, and plenty of networking. Today’s opening-night soiree, which takes place from 8:00 to 11:00, is an all-white VIP cocktail party where you can mingle with industry professionals and hopefuls, and hear homegrown R&B idol Casely sing his hit song “Emotional.” Visit for tickets and a schedule of events.
