Tammi Terrell, creator of glam darlings at Tammi's House of Flava, her North Miami salon, will be styling and cutting and throwing attitude as she sculpts intricate designs upon the heads of her models.
You could say Tammi is something of a performance artist. When she takes the stage at Hair Wars, The Battle of America's Hair Entertainers, she'll be whipping up a storm with an array of gels and waxes as she performs a choreographed scene she calls "Temptress and the Dawn," in which she'll be dressed as a pimp while doing do's.
If this doesn't make sense, trust that Tammi knows what she's doing. After more than fourteen years in the hairstyling business, she considers what she does more than just an occupation. "Doing hair is an art form," she says. "As an artist you have the privilege to show off your ability to work with hair."
Tammi will be one of the many hair artists from South Florida, Detroit, Oakland, Phoenix, and Columbus taking the stage in this roving hair fair. She's been performing in the show for more than four years and is always devising new ways in which to wow the crowd with her creativity.
Although the festival emphasizes all the creativity and fun that is possible on a head of hair, there is serious one-upmanship going on. Hair haute couture including intricate braids, wild colors, crinkling, ironing, African knots, dreadlocks, and glamorous falls will be complemented by super-edgy fashion and tons of attitude.
If you've ever wondered just how far you could extend an extension or billow out a 'fro, you'll get an eyeful as the hair artists tease and model in musical numbers. -- Juan Carlos Rodriguez
