Wig in a Box
Once upon a time, an unusual German boy named Hansel fell in love with Luther, a U.S. soldier, but East Germanys communist shackles kept them apart. In order to flee, the two would have to marry as man and woman. So Hansel underwent surgery to take over his mother Hedwigs identity. Unfortunately, the surgery didnt go as planned, and Luther eventually left the malformed and heartbroken Hedwig. Now recovered from the breakup, she assembled a rock band, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, comprised of Korean-born army wives. In 1998, John Cameron Mitchell joined forces with Stephen Trask to rock the world with the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the groundbreaking tale of a transgender rock singer. After an international tour and a series of awards, the story made it onto the big screen in 2001. Inviting South Florida to take part in the Hedhead phenomenon, Infinite Abyss Productions brings Hedwig back to life at Empire Stage this week. Promising to be tran-tastic, Hedwig and the Angry Inch will preview this Friday and Saturday.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 5. Continues through June 4, 2011
