We All Wear the Ribbon
Just about everyone knows someone whos had it. Maybe its that nice teacher you had in middle school. Maybe your friend from college, or a friend of the family. Or maybe its someone in your family -- mom, aunt, sister, grandmother. Theyre far from alone; there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. In homage to these women, we wear the pale pink ribbon. To raise funds for a cure, you can show support at a variety of Breast Cancer Awareness month events throughout the October.
The second annual Shades of Pink event takes place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Grove Isle Resort and Spa (4 Grove Island Dr., Coconut Grove). Therell be live painting by Kiki Valdez, flame throwers, and a fashion show to support the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation. Tickets cost $25 in advance if purchased online at www.shadesofpink07.eventbrite.com, or $35 at the door. Fashionistas, be ready to shop till you drop at the annual Key to the Cure event at Saks Fifth Avenue (9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour). The national shopping weekend will last through October 21, and a percentage of all sales will benefit the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Society. The kickoff party is this evening from 6:00 to 9:00, and for $30, patrons can enjoy complimentary Grey Goose cocktails and culinary tastings by Social Miami, China Grill, Tuscan Steak, Table 8, and other fine local restaurants.
