Warm Up to the Cup
For Ecuador’s national soccer team, the upcoming match against England could only be more of a home game if they were playing it in Quito. South Florida crowds favor a Latin team, and the match is only England’s second at Sun Life Stadium (2269 NW 199th St., Miami Gardens). Then again, England is working on warming up to World Cup 2014. And there is the undeniable “Beckham effect” happening in South Florida. England’s former soccer star has been doing everything possible to win over the hearts and affections of Miami’s soccer-loving fan base by bringing an MLS soccer team to town. Maybe that’ll translate into a little more love for the Brits this week. With the World Cup less than a month away, this is the real deal for England, and Sun Life Stadium will be privy to watching the team at full strength. The all-star club, headed by Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, hopes to break the recent trend of early English exits from the World Cup, which the team hasn’t won since Lyndon B. Johnson was president.
