No, the pile of colorful clothes is not a highly stylized garage sale. Its visual artist Shinique Smiths exuberant manifestation of praise music, poetry, and urban life. The Baltimore-born artists latest solo exhibition, Menagerie, features her unique designs, which blend the flamboyant lines of street graffiti (using Japanese calligraphy ink instead of spray paint) with bundled clothing, household items, and found objects. Her creations take on a potent meaning beyond the urban landscape. They become a colorful, controlled expression of how everyday objects and imagery factor into our modern lives.
Tuesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m. Starts: Sept. 16. Continues through Nov. 17, 2010
