The clock is ticking. The countdown to Miami Art Museum’s transformation into PAMM has officially begun. This time next year, when you visit the cultural institution relocated to a snazzy bayfront Herzog & de Meuron-designed building in Museum Park, it will be known as the Pérez Art Museum Miami. To commemorate its rechristening and looming move, MAM is celebrating the Big Mango’s bustling creative talent with “New Work Miami 2013,” a group show featuring recent and newly commissioned work by a dozen local artists in anticipation of Art Basel Miami Beach, when the planet’s top art-world swells invade our shores. “The work coming out of Miami’s flourishing arts scene is fresh and ingenious. It challenges us to develop new ways of engaging with the arts community and our many constituents,” Thom Collins, the museum’s director, says. Among those lined up for the swan song of the museum’s current incarnation is Sinisa Kukec, who employs found furniture and sundry materials to create sculptures oozing with organic textures and jewel-like effects. George Sánchez-Calderón and Tom Scicluna will also be represented by eye-popping outdoor works, and the local collective Spring Break has been invited to contribute “film screenings, discussions, workshops, site-specific projects, and other time-based experiences” to MAM’s farewell show. “We are delighted to present this exhibition and, as we prepare to move to our new facility, look forward to creating new programming commensurate with Miami’s incredible artistic activity,” Collins concludes.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 21. Continues through June 2, 2012
