This Is The End
Well, this is it. Except for a dangling make-up game against the Detroit Tigers next Friday, September 27, this is the last home series for the 2013 Miami Marlins. Their baseball season can all be summed up with a single name: Jose Fernandez. The defected Cuban pitcher has been the sole bright spot on a team that, thanks to incompetent management, sold itself into baseball mediocrity. Except for Fernandez, and underachieving Giancarlo Stanton, the Marlins have left a sour taste in every fan’s mouth. The team is on pace to fall at least ten wins short of last year’s so-so team, narrowly beating Houston as the worst in the league. At least there is some young talent, but isn’t that the same promise management makes year after year, only for those players to be traded away as soon as they’re about to hit their prime? (Think of Miguel Cabrera and Hanley Ramirez.) Then again, they are Miami’s team, and a suitable year-end goodbye might provide a successful start in 2014. Maybe.
