The Raddest Day of the Year
Surfing and skateboarding: Both call for balance, astounding tricks, and a cool-cat mentality. Now the two sports have yet another thing in common. This year International Surf Day and Go Skateboarding Day will be celebrated today, meaning that slopes of land and sea alike will be proudly claimed by long-haired dudes who might or might not use words like gnarly and awesome in regular conversation.
Its a round-the-world celebration. Worldwide weve got 60,000 members. There are chapters in Guam, France, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica.... Its a great day to paddle out, catch some waves. And its so cool to know that there are people all over the world doing the same thing. It connects us all, says TJ Marshall of the Surfrider Foundation. Besides praying for waves off Miami Beach, Surfrider members will host a chill get-together from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the sand near Third Street to begin the celebrations with a paddle-out and beach cleanup. The festivities continue from 7:00 to 11:00 at BBQ Beach (1555 Washington Ave., Miami Beach). Surfrider will present a cool slide show of local surf photography by the amazing Lou Lozada and Oscar Socarras, interspersed with short surf videos and sweet reggae music provided by DJ Lance-O. The night will include lots o drinking and conclude with a raffle. Visit www.intlsurfingday.com. Skater boys and girls need not feel left out of the fun. The dudes at MIA Skate Shop have your back with an all-day skateboarding fiesta hosted by Forest Kirby at Control Skate Park (380 NW 24th St., Miami). Roll out at noon.
