The Furball’s Fairy Godmother

Donna Halpern has earned her wings. As the founder of Fairy Tails, one of our favorite nonprofit, no-kill animal shelters, she is always caring for abandoned animals. Last year’s hurricane season tested her determination and endurance. Besides accommodating 23 dogs from New Orleans, Fairy Tails donated food and supplies to afflicted communities across Florida and the Gulf Coast.

“We gave away 1.8 million pounds of food last year! I’m very proud of us,” Halpern says. Today Fairy Tails is hosting its fourth annual Will Bark for Food event in honor of National Homeless Animals Day, and the goal is to top last year’s incredible feat. Meet the Fairy Tails family in front of Petco (12014 N. Kendall Dr., Kendall) today from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They will be happily accepting donations such as blankets, towels, food, and especially money. All sorts of furry friends will be available for adoption. Cats cost $75, and doggies go for $175. Be sure to shake paws with Katrina survivors Jay Jay and Cheyenne. Halpern hopes the next hurricane finds them sheltered from the storm with a loving family. Call 305-596-9694, or visit
