The Fat Lady Hasn't Sung Yet
It’s been another successful season for Florida Grand Opera, and like all good things, it must come to an end.
Closing out the 2013-14 season is Jules Massenet’s Thaïs. Adapted from the novel by Anatole France, Thaïs tells the story of a courtesan (AKA a fancy prostitute) who tempts the piety of a sweet monk named Athanael. He wants her to turn to a life of religion, and she wants him to fall into her bed. Will lust reign over all things holy, or will good prevail and persuade the courtesan to change her tune?
Leading this production is Angela Mortellaro as Thaïs, and Kristopher Irmiter as Athanael, both of whom will make their Florida Grand Opera debuts. Thaïs opens this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). Ticket start at $25. Due to the sexual nature of this opera, no children under 6 years of age will be permitted. Call 305-949-6722 or visit arshtcenter.org.
