Not since The Motherfucker With the Hat has GableStage (1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables) mounted a play with a title as controversial as Cock. It’s right up there with previous GableStage provocations such as Fat Pig and Smut. And no, Cock has nothing to do with a rooster: It’s about a gay man who, on a brief separation from his boyfriend, meets the girl of his dreams, thereby complicating all three lives in this sexual-orientation-bending triangle. Like Duncan Macmillan’s Lungs, which enjoyed its South Florida premiere earlier this year, Mike Bartlett’s Cock is theater stripped of its artifice, with the playwright specifying no scenery, props, furniture, or miming. This means that one of GableStage’s perennially strongest assets — its set designs — will not be part of its toolbox this time around, putting an even greater emphasis on the quartet of actors and the playwright’s difficult text, which won him an Olivier Award for the play’s 2009 premiere in London.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 & 7 p.m. Starts: May 18. Continues through June 16, 2013
