Not many modern pop singers have the pipes of the wispy, soulful Natalie Merchant. The earthy vocalist’s career is grounded in another era, when lyrics were intimate and frontwomen could be powerful in their presence without having to twerk. Though it might sometimes feel like an eternity since the ’80s and ’90s bred such stars, those days are far from gone.
Get back to your folk-pop roots and experience Merchant’s real talent when she takes over the stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). The alternative songstress will captivate with songs from her decade-spanning career. Not only has she enjoyed five solo albums, but she also put out seven records of original content with 10,000 Maniacs. It’s Merchant’s solo work we remember best, though, including the hits “Thank You,” “Wonder,” “Jealousy,” and “Carnival.”
