Take Your Mother Out
We love you, Mom! It's your weekend and we're going to celebrate everything that's cool about you, because where would we be without you? Oh, yeah, we wouldn't be here without you. In honor of all the great moms out there, we've put together a roundup of Mother's Day activities so you can spend less time thinking of what to do and more time making your mom feel like a queen.
Give your mom something to laugh at besides your funky hairdo and Cirque du Soleil-inspired makeup by taking her to see a kooky comedy show. The Laughing Gas improv group is giving props to mothers with its "Yo' Momma" show. "My mom endured eleven hours of painful labor ... so I thought I'd give her ninety minutes of comedy," says cast member Valerie Zach. The show starts at 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday (May 6 and 7) at the Main Street Playhouse (6766 Main St., Miami Lakes). Admission is ten dollars for you; free for your mom. Call 305-461-1161, or visit www.laughinggasimprov.com.
Instead of sending Mom a beautiful bouquet to wilt within a week, take her to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables) for the Tropical Flowering Tree Society's annual Mother's Day show and sale. She can choose from fragrant gardenias and frangipani to beautiful brugmansias and dombeyas, and she'll have a blooming reminder of your love all year long. Stroll through the garden Saturday and Sunday (May 7 and 8) from 9:30 to 4:30. Admission is $15; $12 for seniors; free for members. Call 305-669-9864, or visit www.tfts.org.
Hey, kids! If you're stuck for gift ideas, why not make something for mom? Home Depot (various locations; call 1-800-553-3199, or visit www.homedepot.com) is offering a free Mother's Day Kids' Workshop from 9:00 to noon Saturday, May 7. Children (ages five to twelve) can build a cute birdhouse planter for mom, and the kind folks at the home-improvement store will even throw in a free packet of flower seeds.
If you don't possess enough flair to whip up a tempting mélange of pancakes, fruit, and eggs for breakfast, you can take your special lady to the Deering Estate at Cutler (16701 SW 72nd Ave., Miami) for a Mother's Day brunch Sunday, May 8, from 10:00 to 2:00. The cost is $48.95 for adults and $30 for children (including tax and gratuities). Reservations are required. Call 305-235-1668, Ext. 233, or visit www.deeringestate.org. The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne (455 Grand Bay Dr., Key Biscayne) is also hosting a lavish brunch from 11:30 to 3:00 Sunday, featuring sushi, caviar, pastries, and mimosas. Moms will also receive a special gift. Cost is $75 for adults; $35 for children. Call 305-365-4286 for reservations.
For those of you with a mother who lives out of town, why not call her up and play a special song? We recommend "Thank U Mamma" by the surprisingly sentimental reggae star Sizzla. Mom is sure to get weepy when she hears the lyrics: "Thank you mamma for the nine months you carried me through/All the pain and sufferin'/No one knows the pressure you bear, just only you/Give you all my love oh yeah." There are plenty of activities for you to enjoy with your mom this weekend. Check out the Mother's Day section of our online listings for more ideas.
