Take Your Mama Out
An evening at the Miami Beach Cinematheque (512 Española Way, Miami Beach) is like a visit to your eccentric aunt, who seems a bit odd to some but is undeniably fun nonetheless. The MBC is located in a modest storefont among the tourist-trap restaurants of Española Way; the "cinema" is literally a room with a hodgepodge of plastic chairs for sittin', and the films are projected onto a white wall painted. This month's offering is Chris & Don: A Love Story, an Irish documentary about the relationship between Christopher Isherwood the creative mind behind the show Cabaret and his lover Don Bachardy. It just so happens Don was about 30 years younger than ol' Chris, but never mind such lurid details this film is a warm, sophisticated, and funny look at the artists' lives, both professional and personal. And just like a visit to Auntie, with all the eccentricities, you'll be glad you stopped by for a visit.
Chris & Don is part of the Cinematheques Weekend Out series, which promotes GLBT-friendly films. But anything shown at this little place has a touch of gay in it somewhere, so just go and enjoy. Showtimes are 7:50 and 9:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
