Take Me Out

Well rested after a three-game home stint against the Houston Astros, the Miami Marlins are at it again with a midweek series against interdivision rivals the Chicago Cubs. Considered one of professional sports’ most storied franchises, the Cubs were just five outs away from their first World Series appearance since 1945 when the Marlins rallied to beat the beloved Chicago squad in 2003. A now-infamous foul ball hit off the bat of then-Marlin Louis Castillo and caught by one Steve Bartman led to a series of unfortunate (for the Cubbies) events that resulted in an 8-3 Marlins victory and forced a seventh and decisive NLCS game. The rest, of course, is history. The Marlins went on to the World Series and beat the New York Yankees in six. The Cubs watched from home. But in the eight seasons since, neither team has performed significantly more impressively than the other. The Cubs returned to the postseason in 2007 and 2008 but failed to get past the first round on both occasions. The Marlins, plagued by shoddy personnel changes and a seemingly careless front office, finished an average of 14.68 games back. This year, the Fish are hoping a name change and a new address will help their chances of a World Series run.
