The Tony Award-winning musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee tells the story of six junior high kids (all played by adult actors) locked in an intense spelling bee competition. On top of that stress, they’re also dealing with the quirky angst of prepubescent life. Originally conceived as an improvisational play performed by a New York-based comedy troupe, the production explores the importance of friendship, the unnerving awkwardness of judging and being judged, and the overall agony of growing up and facing adult challenges. Aside from its musical comedy format, it’s also an audience-participation performance. Four audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee. The musical is written by Rebecca Fieldman, and the production’s music and lyrics are by William Finn. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee opens at the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theater on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and runs through February 13.
Wednesdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Jan. 19. Continues through Feb. 13, 2011
