This Sunday, a 100-foot red squid with eight freakishly long tentacles; a 30-foot scuba diver hovering over the Atlantic; and flying flags from the Caribbean will seize the skies over Haulover Beach. No, it’s not a mad science experiment gone wrong. These flying objects are all part of the Kite Day Kite Festival at Haulover Beach Park (10800 Collins Ave., Miami). This Sunday, the annual festival will celebrate 20 years with a “Kites of the Caribbean” theme. In addition to the usual Nemo fish, para foil, and rainbow kites, kite-makers from Cuba, Haiti, and Trinidad will show off their Caribbean pride by flying their native flags high over the shores of Haulover. To make it a truly cultural and authentic experience, these kite-makers will use the same techniques and materials employed in their home countries, such as the traditional paper kites created in Cuba. For those who want to master the art themselves, there will be a free kite-making class. If you think you have what it takes to compete with the pros, enter one of the kite competitions where prizes will be awarded for best homemade kite, highest-flying kite, prettiest kite, and kite with the longest tail. And in case your creation gets attacked by a giant flying squid, kites will be on sale for $5.
