Shoot Everyone in South Beach
So your blog has Pulitzer-worthy shots of your dog in a sweater, your friends' feet in a circle, and our skyline from the causeway. But listen up; youre not a professional photographer till somebody pays you. So get some money, shutterbug - today's 5th Annual South Beach Photomarathon is reinforcing the notion that anybody can do it. Says contest organizer Chendo Perez : "It's not the arrow, it's the Indian. We've had professional photographers get beat with disposable cameras."
The contest gives you four hours to shoot 24 images on six topics that will be revealed the day of the event. You get your topics two at a time as you shoot and your creative self expression is encouraged. What would we shoot? We're going straight for the asses of South Beach. First prize is $250, a special Plexiglas print of your winning shot courtesy of Tropicolor Photo Lab, and a Starbucks gift bag. Proceeds raised by the entrance fee go to helping foster kids. Students can get in on the action for $25, but it's $50 for everyone else, and that's for early registration. Perez says: "Photography is the most influential medium of this and the last century; it has become so popular, nowadays everybody can be a photographer and it's great." Register at fotomission.org.
