For 27 years, Jewish authors and celebrities have been visiting Miami and bypassing the beach. The annual Alper JCC Jewish Book Festival always takes place in the heart of Kendall, which is great news for literary-minded, southern-dwelling Miamians. It’s a thrill to know you don’t always have to schlep downtown to hear the wise, funny, interesting words of famed authors.
This year’s lineup is diverse and fascinating, and the festivities this week are well worth checking out. Popular and funny Israeli band Kobi Oz and Teapacks will rock the JCC Saturday night. On Sunday, Phil Rosenthal, the creator of the ever-popular Everybody Loves Raymond, will present his book You’re Lucky You’re Funny: How Life Becomes a Sitcom. On Wednesday, Leonard Getz will present From Broadway to the Bowery, a thoroughly researched tome about the early movie tough guys. Authors will present everything from biographies to photography to children’s literature, as is the case for today’s event. Author Judith Viorst will share the followup to her wildly successful Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day -- the notably more positive-sounding Alexander and the Wonderful, Marvelous, Excellent, Terrific Ninety Days. Good for Alexander, turning that frown upside down! Meet Viorst at 10:30 a.m. at Temple Beth Am, 5660 N. Kendall Dr., Miami. The festival continues through November 13.
