Season’s Meetings

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Yes, even in snow-free South Florida. Miami may not get the winter weather, but there are still plenty of ways to celebrate the season. Holiday wonderlands are hard to come by in this tropical oasis, but they exist. At the Deering Estate at Cutler (16701 SW 72nd Ave., Palmetto Bay), you’ll find the glorious grandeur of days gone by. All the buildings at this historic site are decked out with holiday décor, featuring seasonal decorations and delights created by local garden clubs and groups. The spectacle runs through this Tuesday and again December 26 through 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This Saturday, there will also be story time with Santa. The wonderland is free with regular admission, which costs $12 for adults and $7 for children ages 4 to 14; estate members get in free. Visit or call 305-235-1668. With everyone from the Muppets to Jean-Luc Picard starring in A Christmas Carol over the years, few can make this old classic feel anything less than stale. But Bill Murray makes everything awesome, and such is the case with Scrooged. This ’80s version of the Dickens tale is screening before Christmas, so you can laugh your ass off and get into the holiday spirit all at once. Bring some cash for food truck treats, and do a no-rain dance in advance. The movie starts at 8 p.m. this Friday at Brickell World Plaza (600 Brickell Ave., Miami). Admission and parking are free. Visit Animals have had a hand in Christmas since Jesus was chilling with camels in Bethlehem, so Zoo Miami is the perfect place to celebrate the season. With its Zoo Lights shindig, the whole spot is decked out in animal-shaped lights and dazzling trees. Plus, you can take pictures with Santa, drink hot chocolate, and shop for Christmas swag. The show runs from 7 to 10 p.m. this Friday through December 30 (excluding this Tuesday and Wednesday). Tickets cost $5 per person (children 2 and younger get in free); hot chocolate and pics with Santa cost extra. Visit
