Rollin with the Homies
Traditional sushi is made of salted fish and fermented rice, yet somehow the gourmet goody has become a trendy part of American pop culture, and more than a few decidedly nontraditional rolls have popped up on menu pages across the nation. One bite into a bagel roll filled with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and onion and your taste buds will transport you to a synagogue in Brooklyn, not ancient Japan. This Friday, sushi chefs from all over Florida will meet up at Alliance Française de Miami for SushiMasters, a rolled-up throwdown. Each chef will bring his or her best morikami plate and signature roll and prepare them live onstage in front of you and a panel of judges. The winner will advance to the finals in L.A., but not before you get to sample their compact, flavorful vittles. The competition begins at 7 p.m., and its totally free for you to watch, eat, and moan in culinary delight.
