When you’ve had enough Ultra-style tiki-tiki music, or when you’ve heard one Juicy J song too many, an event like the New World Symphony Percussion Consort is just what you need to cleanse your musical palate and get back to basics. Performing Music for 18 Musicians, by minimalist music pioneer Steve Reich, the New World Percussion Fellows will take audience members on a hypnotically pulsating hourlong journey as the season’s final performance. Fellows will be coached by Russell Hartenberger, one of the original musicians from the Reich ensemble and a percussion professor at the University of Toronto. Described as “a balance between utter simplicity and complexity” by Jayson Greene of Pitchfork, Reich’s infamous piece is based on human breathing, moving in phases and mesmerizing throughout. A cycle of 11 chords, Reich’s piece is credited with influencing the creation of minimal techno and tape-loop experiments by the likes of William Basinski. Hear the beautiful blend of sounds at the New World Center (500 17th St., Miami Beach) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10. Call 305-673-3331 or visit nws.edu.
