Reminder: Youre Going to Die
There are few things contemporary artists enjoy more than forcing us to face the harsh reality were all dying slowly, every single second of every minute of every day of our lives. For the sake of marketability, however, these bearers of truth try to soften the blow with arty euphemisms such as temporality, as if that overwrought word scares the shit out of us any less than death.
Yet unpleasant as it might be, the occasional reality check courtesy of the fine arts is both therapeutic and necessary. So, this Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m., confront the impermanent nature of your existence when X-Ray opens at ArtCenter/South Florida during Lincoln Roads monthly First Saturday Art Walk. Featuring sculpture by Bill Burke, looped video by Jacek Kolasinski, and audio art by Orlando Jacinto Garcia, the multimedia exhibition fixates on fossilized and decaying organic matter, barely moving images of biological specimens encased in melting ice, and the haunting, digitally processed sounds of the hydrocrystalophone. Admission to the gallery is free.
Sat., Jan. 9, 7 p.m., 2010
