Positive Vibrations

The press on reggae musicians is invariably negative nowadays, and with valid reason. Many modern-day dancehall dons don’t seem to see the hypocrisy in recording lighters-in-the-air odes to love and unity and then performing vitriolic paeans to homophobic slaughter. To the critics, the title of the One Love Festival might seem a tad ironic. Although it is true that headliners Buju Banton and Capleton have made headlines for their controversial lyrics, fans of Jamaican music will really be able to feel the love at tonight’s all-star show. Newcomers Assassin and Elan will offer crowd-pleasing hits, and two of reggae’s all-time greats will be anchoring the lineup with uplifting reggae music.

Following an incredible performance at this year’s Memorial Fest, Cocoa Tea is returning to lay down another greatest-hits session. The legendary Gregory Isaacs will be on hand to “Cool Down the Pace.” To true aficionados, Isaacs is known as the Cool Ruler. His lazy delivery and trademark moan epitomize the subgenre known as lover’s rock. Fans will be skanking to “Night Nurse,” “My Number One,” and “Rumors” tonight at Revolution, 100 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $45 at the door, and the show begins at 8:00.
