The key to being as spooky as possible, according to Anthony Hopkins, is acting totally normal. In an interview with New York Magazine’s Vulture blog, Hopkins offered advice to Mads Mikkelsen, the actor who plays his Silence of the Lambs villain, Hannibal Lecter, in an upcoming TV show. “The key is, when playing a crazy man like that, is to play the total opposite,” Hopkins said. “Play him as totally sane. Play him as ordinary. Play it very innocently... Don’t try to be evil.” Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense played by Hopkins in the new movie Hitchcock, might agree. Hitchcock’s films are known for their expert restraint, holding viewers in tense fascination as, for example, Janet Leigh slowly undresses and unwittingly steps into the fatal shower scene in Psycho. Hitchcock tells the behind-the-scenes story of the making of that film, and Hopkins’s performance is already the subject of Oscar buzz.
