On the Road Again
Being a beatnik should be more fashionable than ever. Not because of the clichéd black garb, beret, and sunglasses -- though those sartorial statements remain timelessly stylish. But the beat movement was about rhythm, nonconformist language, and rebelling against an oppressive establishment -- a cultural revolution largely shaped by Allen Ginsbergs Howl, William Burroughss Naked Lunch, and Jack Kerouacs On the Road. Tonight break out your bongos and join erudite author David Plumb for Beat Poet Night at Books & Books. Plumb will showcase his latest poetry collection, Man with a Suitcase, which features tales that capture a literary era. I read from Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, Bobby Kaufman, and a few others. And I intersperse anecdotes and some of their thoughts, explains Plumb. Give him snaps of approval tonight at 7:00, and stick around for Films in the Courtyard at 8:30.
Sat., March 25, 7 p.m.
