No Pot o’ Gold Here

Judy Garland mania continues. Less than a year after The Wizard of Oz opened in 3-D IMAX theaters nationwide and Delray Beach’s Arts Garage opened its sold-out run of Beyond the Rainbow — a musical biography of Garland’s life — Actors’ Playhouse is getting in on the action. The company opens 2014 with End of the Rainbow, an investigation of Garland’s psyche as much as her songs as she readies her umpteenth comeback — a five-week run of performances at London’s legendary Talk of the Town nightclub in 1968. Her trademark wit remains intact, but she’s also battling drug addiction, man trouble, and, naturally, negative press- — struggles that both inform and threaten to torpedo her fraught performances. This sounds a lot more intriguing than the standard Garland musical revue; there are only 11 songs performed, so expect a thorough peek into the troubled performer’s mind in the months leading to her death. A six-piece band will perform onstage in the David Arisco-directed production, and Boston-based actress Kathy St. George, who has played Garland before, will portray the star in this production, alongside Colin McPhillamy, Michael Laurino, and Terry M. Cain.
Sundays, 3 p.m.; Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Jan. 12. Continues through Feb. 9, 2014
