No Jive Turkey

Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce fresh out of the can – the traditional Thanksgiving menu has become so familiar that families are in search of alternatives to the time-honored feast. Turkey deep-fryers are selling like hotcakes, and the little shelves near your grocery’s cashier are overflowing with recipe books suggesting new fixings for the family table. Here’s a better alternative. The women of the house are sick of slaving over a hot stove while the guys watch football. We suggest you TiVo that game and watch it later sans commercials, and take your mama out for a true gourmet Thanksgiving feast. There’s an impressive range of options. Who says Mom wants turkey, anyway?

For a fresh spin on the traditional menu, consider the “Maine” Event at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach. This seemingly endless buffet features delicacies from the briny deep, including clams, mussels, deliciously healthy grilled fish, and, of course, lobster. For traditionalists the typical faves are also available. The seafood buffet costs $85 for adults and $40 for children under twelve. Call 786-276-4000 for reservations.

If Mama wants to get her baby-backs for this year’s banquet, take her to North One 10 (11052 Biscayne Blvd., Miami; 305-893-4211, for its Turkey Day spread. Begin with squash bisque; then break out the finger bowls and cloth napkins for braised angus short ribs served with fried leeks and a wild mushroom demiglace. This dinner costs $52 per person and $25 for the little ones.

Keep the holidays organic at Touch Restaurant (910 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach; 305-532-8003) for maple wood-roasted organic turkey served with mojito cranberry relish. Don’t forget the vanilla-roasted sweet potatoes with candied pecans. The prix fixe menu costs $45. Or wander over to Vita Garden (1906 Collins Ave., Miami Beach; 305-538-7855) for delicious pumpkin souffle, made Italian-style with spicy semifreddo and sweet golden apples.
