Music Mogul in the Making
What do Russell Simmons, Dr. Dre, New Times columnist Luther Uncle Luke Campbell, and, heck, even Suge Night (pre-Death Row bankruptcy) have in common? Besides possessing an ear for hip-hop, they are, or were, savvy businessmen. Thats the part of the hip-hop game that some upstarts never figure out. Newbies can get a primer on what to expect in the business from people who know what theyre talking about, including Uncle Luke, at the Miami Music Festival: Emerging Artists Conference & New Music Showcase. During the Hip Hop Power Panel, attendees can learn about the value of publicists and booking agencies, promoting CDs to DJs, and making money on tours and appearances. The panel is one of more than two dozen workshops on everything from copyright law to gospel music to five things you must do at every gig running Thursday through Sunday. In addition to live performances (read about the lineup on page XX), there are plenty of information sessions for aspiring musicians and industry types. Its all packed into two days beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Miami.
Thursdays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: Nov. 11. Continues through Nov. 14, 2010
