Let’s take a moment to appreciate the humble word. Where would we be without words? They fill the pages of books that line the walls of libraries and bookshops all over the world. They can keep you guessing; they can explain your feelings; they can sound pretty, or not, to resonant effect. At the very least, they can let your local alt-weekly tell you about the best things to do in town this week. And when used by poets, they’re usually twisted around in all shapes and forms to reach a conclusion that is both mind-bending and comforting. Poets are a gifted few, but fortunately for Floridians, Howard Camner is a world-renowned master of words who hails from the Sunshine State.
Camner’s list of accomplishments could fill a book of their own, but one of his most prestigious recognitions was his nomination for Poet Laureate of Florida in 1980. Now, with his 17th book of poetry, Poems From the Mud Room, Camner has collected his favorite works spanning from 1976 to 2012, and he’ll be in town to read them this Friday.
