Once upon a time, long ago (well, it was the 1970s), a group of teenage friends heard rumors of an abandoned crop of the plant Cannabis sativa that lay not far from where they went to high school in California. They made plans to investigate, meeting at the statue of Louis Pasteur on campus at one seemingly random yet destined-to-be-legendary time: 4:20. Little did they know that those three little numbers would soon evolve, first becoming slang and then transcending that pedestrian category to become something halfway between ritual and religion. Four-twenty: the sacred hour at which we are free to, like, free our minds, man.
Wait, what were we saying?
Whatever. The point is that Friday is the 20th day of the fourth month, making it an annual holiday for pot smokers worldwide. Miami is home to plenty of 4/20-themed parties, but what are you gonna do when you’re out of weed? Eat yourself into a post-high coma, of course.
The Shops at Midtown Miami ( 3252 NE First Ave., Miami) are the perfect place to do it. At 100 Montaditos, you can do it one tiny sandwich at a time. The eatery offers both savory and sweet options to satisfy any type of munchies you have, and every Friday, you can get two buckets of beer for the price of one — the better to extend that wicked buzz. Sustain Restaurant + Bar hosts a happy hour every day with budget-priced grub that’s as good for the earth as for your stoned taste buds. And if you’re too, uh, relaxed to hang out in a restaurant like a normal person, grab a couple of tacos to go from Mercadito and head to the Midtown Greenspace for a picnic while you come down.
Time it just right, and you’ll be full and sober in time for the opening of Marley at nearby O Cinema (90 NW 29th St., Miami), where you can start the process all over again.
